Volunteer Projects with Native American Communities
Since I have a background in trauma studies, it was perhaps inevitable that some kind of serendipitous occurrence involving the meeting of my research with Cuban rafters and my work with Native American would occur. In January of 2012 I visited the Trauma Resolution Center in Miami to get information that might be useful for further interviews with Cuban rafters. Instead, I came away knowing that since it allows for peer provision of trauma-recovery services, this was a prefect model for resource-strapped Indian Country. One year later, two women from a reserve in upstate NY have been trained in Traumatic Incident Resolution and have taken the first steps toward creating a Trauma Resolution Center. I will post more information on this as it develops.
